The clock stops if you leave the page, and starts again when you come back.
How does the mental math test work?
The clock starts as soon as you press Start. The first sums are small additions. After every few right answers, new kinds join in: subtraction, times tables and division that comes out even.
A wrong answer does not stop the game. You see the right answer, and a new sum appears. Your score is the number of right answers when time runs out.
What does my mental math score mean?
Your score shows how quickly and accurately you did simple sums today, on this device. There are no norms for this game, so there is no official good score. Your own best is the fairest comparison.
Typing speed matters too, especially on a phone. Compare scores on the same device.
How can I do sums in my head faster?
- Round and fix: 49 + 27 is 50 + 27, minus 1.
- Split numbers: 8 x 14 is 8 x 10 plus 8 x 4.
- Check the last digit: 7 x 8 must end in 6.
- For division, ask which times table fact fits.
- Keep your eyes on the sum while you type.
These are standard mental math tricks. They make each step smaller, so there is less to hold in mind.
Is mental math part of an IQ test?
Full IQ tests measure more than reasoning. The WAIS-5 has sections for working memory and fluid reasoning, among others. Our reasoning test includes a few word problems with numbers. You can see examples on our IQ test questions page.
This game is not an IQ measure. A large review of brain training found that practice improves the practiced task. It found little proof of gains in other tasks. Take our free IQ test for a reasoning score with a range. The methodology shows how that score is made.
