Visual Memory Test

This visual memory test lights up a few tiles at once, then hides them. Tap every tile that was lit. Each level adds a tile, and the grid grows as you go.

Visual memory: Ready to play

  1. Some tiles light up for a moment, all at once.
  2. When they go dark, tap every tile that was lit.
  3. 3 wrong taps in one level cost a life. You have 3 lives.

Keys: Tab to a tile, Enter or Space to tap it

This game needs sight: the tiles are shown only as light.

How does the visual memory test work?

Level one lights 3 tiles on a small grid. They show for a moment, then go dark. Find them all to clear the level.

A wrong tap is marked with a cross. 3 wrong taps in one level cost a life, and the level starts again with new tiles. You have 3 lives. Your score is the highest level you cleared.

What does a visual memory test measure?

It measures how much of a picture you can hold for a few seconds. Psychologists call this visual or visuospatial short-term memory. A well-known lab task for it is the Corsi block-tapping test.

Research suggests people hold about 3 to 5 chunks at once. In this game, a chunk can be a shape made of several tiles. That is how people clear levels with more tiles than that.

Is this a photographic memory test?

No. Some people search for a photographic memory test, but this game does not measure that. It measures short-term memory for a pattern, which everyone uses every day.

How can I do better?

  • See the lit tiles as one shape, such as a line, a corner or a letter.
  • Split a big pattern into two small shapes.
  • Tap the tiles you are sure of first.
  • Stay calm after a miss. You have more than one try per level.

Does this game improve memory?

It improves your score in this game. A large review of brain training found that people get better at what they practice. It found little proof that the gains carry over to other tasks.

FAQ

What level is good on a visual memory test?

This game has no norms, so there is no official good level. Compare your score with your own earlier games on the same device.

Can I play with a keyboard?

Yes. Use Tab to reach a tile and Enter or Space to tap it. The pattern is shown only as light, so the game needs sight.

Is my score saved?

Your best and your last few results are saved in this browser. When a game ends, its score is also counted anonymously: one number, with no name, account or device details, so the site can show how plays compare once a game has enough of them. The cookie policy lists the storage item.
